It might sound like a lot, but it is true: Spanish is the official language for more than 20 countries and the native language for more than 329 million people, while more than 450 million people in the world speak Spanish! In addition to Spain, Spanish is also the official language for most of the countries of Latin America (Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Costa Rica, etc.)

Lately, Spanish has become an important language in international business, as well as an important language of the shipping sector.

The Spanish language is often used in international scientific publications, in the last years.

Spanish is not only the 2nd language of international communication and the 3rd internet language, but also it is estimated that soon 10% of the global population will be speaking Spanish.

In the culture and arts, the presence and contribution of the Spanish speaking world is significant. Some of the many examples would be the classical Spanish and American masterpieces of international literature, Don Quijote by Cervantes and Hundred Years of Solitude as well as Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez; the well known painters Picasso, Goya, Velazquez and Dali; architectssuch as Antonio Gaudi os Santiago Calatrava; actors such as Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Antonio Banderas, Benicio del Toro but also directors such as Pedro Almodóvar, Mariano Barroso, Luis Buñuel, and Alejandro Amenábar; internationally famous singers such as Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin, Juanes, Bebe, Shakira, Manu Chao, Jennifer Lopez, and Cristina Aguilera many of which record their albums both in English and in Spanish (Beyonce, N.Furtado, Nek, Laura Pausini, Shakira, J. Lopez, C. Aguilera).
